The record was established during the 1932 Australian XI tour of North America under the captaincy of Victor Y. Richardson (grandfather of the famous Chappell brothers Ian, Greg and Trevor). Manager of the touring side the notable spin bowler, Arthur Mailey.

Sir Donald's innings of 260 against Western Ontario at Guelph stood as a Canadian record until the 1990 season. It was then surpassed by Don Maxwell when he scored 280 not out for the York University Cricket Club against the Commonwealth Cricket Club in the Toronto & District Cricket Association competition.

It may also be noted that Sir Donald was the first batsman to score two double centuries in a Canadian season. This record has since ben equalled by Don Maxwell in 1990 and Garvin Budhoo in 1991.
